Early flatfender Jeeps mount the tank under the seat rather than behind the axle, and this driver's-side version fits CJ2A, CJ3A, and early CJ3B models up to serial #39838. The straight (non-angled) fuel filler neck and 5-screw sending unit are the tells that separate this from the later 6-screw tank (SKU 0040LS) — check your serial number before ordering. Need the passenger's side instead? That's SKU 0040ES-RH.
A pinhole rust leak in an old steel tank rarely stays a pinhole for long, and by the time it's obvious, the surrounding metal is usually too thin to weld safely. This polyethylene replacement sidesteps rust entirely, so the installation notes below are what actually determines whether this swap goes smoothly.
